Strike Gunner S.T.G came out for the Super Nintendo in 1991, published by Athena. You pilot a lone fighter against an overwhelming enemy force, clearing each stage by destroying everything in your path. The main hook is selecting a special weapon before each mission; you get one choice, and you're stuck with it, so picking the wrong one for the level's boss can mean a quick end. The game scrolls vertically at a steady, manageable pace, but the difficulty ramps up sharply, especially in the later stages where enemy bullets saturate the screen.
