Suikoden: Tierkreis came out on the Nintendo DS in 2009, developed and published by Konami. It was part of that wave of ambitious JRPGs trying to make the most of the dual screens and portability, offering a big world and a long story you could carry around.

You control a young villager who gets pulled into a conflict spanning multiple worlds, and your main goal is to gather the 108 Stars of Destiny to prevent a universal catastrophe. A huge part of the game is recruiting these characters; you'll seek out cooks, former soldiers, and other unique personalities across towns and dungeons. Combat uses a turn-based system where you position your party members in rows, affecting which enemies they can hit and who gets targeted. The pacing is deliberate, with a fair amount of exploration and conversation between battles, and the difficulty is manageable without being trivial. It feels like building a community while slowly unraveling a grand, somber prophecy.
