Super Adventure Island II is one of those SNES games that starts with a plot twist you wouldn’t expect—Master Higgins’ honeymoon gets wrecked by a storm, his wife vanishes, and suddenly he’s also roped into rescuing a princess. Classic 90s chaos.
It plays like a platformer but with this cool RPG twist—you hop between islands on a raft, unlocking new areas as you find items. Some spots are hidden behind switches or puzzles, and there’s actual gear to buy: swords, armor, even magic spells. The first time I stumbled into a shop and realized I could upgrade my attack power, it felt like cheating (in the best way).
Bosses drop key items, regular enemies spill coins and health pickups, and yeah, there’s even a casino if you feel like gambling your hard-earned cash. The overworld map makes it feel less linear than the first game, and you can save anywhere—though you’ll always respawn back at Waku-Waku Island. It’s weirdly charming for a game where you’re basically just trying to get back to your interrupted honeymoon.
