Super Dodge Ball came out on the NES in 1987 from Technos Japan, the same folks behind Double Dragon. It was a time when sports games were starting to get weird, and this one took a simple schoolyard game and cranked it up with an international tournament and characters that felt more like fighters than athletes.
You control a team of six players, moving your captain around the court while the others follow basic AI patterns. The goal is to eliminate the opposing team by hitting them with the ball, either knocking them out or forcing them off the screen. Your main tools are a standard throw, a powerful super throw that charges up, and the ability to catch incoming shots if your timing is right. The game moves quickly, with matches that can turn in an instant if someone lands a big hit or makes a clutch catch. It feels chaotic and immediate, like you're right in the middle of a frantic playground brawl with a ball.
