Super Hockey came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed by Sachen. It was one of many sports titles trying to find a foothold on the platform, a straightforward hockey game without the big league licenses or flash of some contemporaries.
You control a team of five skaters and a goalie, working to outscore your opponent. The game uses a top-down perspective, and you pass the puck, check opposing players off the ball, and take shots on goal. Signature mechanics include a turbo button for short bursts of speed and body checking that sends players sliding across the ice. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty can spike sharply against the computer. It feels like a scrappy, no-frills arcade interpretation of the sport.
