Play Super Shougi (Japan) Online
Move your shogi pieces on a 9x9 board, capture your opponent's king, and strategize with classic rules in this straightforward digital version of Japanese chess.
Super Shougi came out for the Super Nintendo in 1991, published by I'Max Corp. It was one of the earlier digital versions of shogi, the Japanese chess variant, on the system. At the time, it offered a straightforward, no-frills way to play the game at home, without much visual flair or extra modes.
You control the shogi pieces, moving them across a 9x9 board with the goal of capturing your opponent's king. The game includes standard shogi mechanics, such as piece promotion upon entering the enemy camp and the ability to drop captured pieces back onto the board as your own. Matches can be slow and deliberate, with the AI posing a decent challenge even on normal settings. It feels like a quiet, focused test of foresight and tactics.
