Play Super-X Online
Blast through waves of enemy drones and massive bosses in Super-X, an arcade side-scrolling shooter where you control a mech and grab power-ups to survive each chaotic stage.
I first saw Super-X in a dimly lit arcade in 1992, wedged between a racing cabinet and a pinball machine. It was developed by Arcade Innovators, a name I hadn't heard before, but it fit right in with the era's side-scrolling shooters. The cabinet had a simple, clean design, nothing too flashy, but the screen drew you in with its sharp colors and smooth animation. It felt like a solid, straightforward entry in a genre that was already crowded with classics.
You control a heavily armed mech, moving left to right across varied industrial and alien landscapes. Your main goal is to survive each stage, destroying enemy drones and larger boss machines that guard key points. The game uses a power-up system where defeated enemies sometimes drop weapon upgrades, like spread shots or homing missiles, which you have to collect quickly before they vanish. Another key mechanic is the energy shield, which can absorb a few hits but needs time to recharge after breaking. The pacing is relentless; enemies swarm from all directions, and the difficulty spikes noticeably after the first few levels. Playing Super-X feels like a constant test of reflexes and positioning, where every small victory matters.
