Pick a penguin (or a goofy chicken), hit the waves, and chain together flips and tricks before wiping out. Simple, snappy, and way better than most movie tie-ins.
Surf's Up for the Game Boy Advance came out in 2007, published by Ubisoft. It was one of those licensed games that showed up late in the system's life, a time when developers had really figured out how to push the hardware. It's based on the animated movie, but it stands on its own as a solid little sports title.
You control Cody Maverick, a young penguin surfer, and your main goal is to win the Big Z Memorial Surf Off by earning the highest scores. The gameplay is all about performing tricks; you build your meter by doing grabs and spins, then unleash a special move when it's full. You navigate through different screen by screen courses, avoiding obstacles like rocks and rival surfers. The pacing is quick, with short runs that make it easy to pick up and play, though nailing a long combo chain takes practice. It feels responsive and light, a straightforward arcade experience that doesn't overcomplicate things.
