Play Swords and Serpents (Europe) Online
Four pals huddle around the screen, mapping dungeons on notebook paper while the thief sets off every trap and the mage burns through spells in two rooms. That teleporter just ate Dave—guess he's snake food now.

Swords and Serpents came out for the NES in 1990, published by Acclaim Entertainment. It was part of that wave of first-person dungeon crawlers on the system, a genre that felt ambitious on the hardware, even if it was a bit rough around the edges. You don't see many games like it anymore, where the focus is purely on methodical exploration and resource management.
You control a party of four adventurers, each with a distinct class like fighter or magician, navigating a labyrinth one square at a time. The main goal is to delve deep into a multi-level dungeon, fighting monsters, disarming traps, and gathering keys to progress. Signature mechanics include mapping the dungeon yourself on graph paper (the game offers no automap) and managing your party's limited inventory and spell points very carefully. The pacing is slow and deliberate, and the difficulty is punishing if you're not prepared. It feels like a meticulous, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately satisfying test of your planning and patience.
