Play Swords and Serpents Online
Classic NES dungeon crawler—assemble a party, dive deep, and try not to get eaten by the serpent king. (Spoiler: you will.)

Swords and Serpents came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed by Interplay Entertainment. It was part of that wave of first-person dungeon crawlers on the NES, sitting alongside titles like Dungeon Magic and Shadowgate, offering a more methodical, grid-based take on adventure. You don't see many games like it on the system, which makes it stand out for its particular brand of slow, deliberate exploration.
You control a party of four adventurers, each with their own class, delving into a massive multi-level dungeon. The main goal is to find keys, defeat monsters, and ultimately take down the Serpent King. You move screen by screen through a first-person perspective, managing your party's health, magic, and equipment. Combat is turn-based; you input commands for each character and then watch the exchange play out. The pacing is slow, and the difficulty is unforgiving, with frequent random encounters and limited resources. It feels like a careful, tactical grind where every step deeper requires planning and a little luck.
