Game Overview

Taiko No Tatsujin DS is one of those rhythm games that just works on the DS—you tap the screen like a drum, hit the edges for rim shots, and try not to flub the fast rolls. The song list is mostly J-pop and anime tracks (it’s the Japanese version, after all), but even if you don’t know the music, the beats are stupidly satisfying to nail.

At first I kept missing notes because I was tapping too hard, but once you get the hang of the timing, it feels like you’re actually drumming. The touch controls are way more responsive than you’d expect, and the higher difficulties will wreck your fingers if you’re not careful. It’s the kind of game you play for “just one song” and suddenly lose an hour to.

Also, the little taiko drum mascot cheering you on is weirdly motivating.
