Play Tempo Online
You play as a hyperactive grasshopper bouncing through psychedelic levels, dodging disco-themed enemies and unlocking ridiculous dance attacks to save music from a tone-deaf king. The controls are slippery, but nailing a combo while your butterfly backup dancer annihilates enemies feels oddly satisfying.
Tempo came out in 1995 for the Sega 32X, developed by Red Company and published by Sega. It was one of those oddball platformers that felt right at home on the 32X, a system known for its experimental and often quirky library. The game didn't try to be a blockbuster; it was just colorful, strange, and full of personality.
You control Tempo, a grasshopper with a serious attitude, as he hops and bounces through surreal, music-themed stages. Your main goal is to rescue the kidnapped Minnie Mellow from the villainous King Dirge. The gameplay involves navigating screen by screen, avoiding enemies, and collecting musical notes to unlock special dance attacks. These attacks, like summoning a butterfly backup dancer or triggering a disco ball explosion, are key to clearing out foes and progressing. The pacing is fast and the controls can feel a bit loose, demanding quick reflexes and precise jumps. Pulling off a successful combo while your butterfly annihilates a row of enemies delivers a genuine, silly kind of satisfaction.
