Game Overview

Metal Head came out in 1995 for the Sega 32X, developed and published by Sega. It was one of those early polygonal 3D games that tried to push the hardware, landing right in that awkward transition period where ambition often outpaced what the console could smoothly deliver. You got a sense they were reaching for something bigger, even if the technology wasn't quite there to meet it.

You control a large, lumbering mech from a third-person perspective, tasked with stopping a terrorist organization by destroying their bases across a futuristic city. The game progresses screen by screen, with you navigating maze-like streets, targeting enemy vehicles and installations with a variety of weapons like missiles and machine guns. A key mechanic is the ability to lock onto targets and switch between different weapon types, which is essential for dealing with the constant assaults. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, because the mech handles with a heavy, deliberate weight and the draw distance is severely limited, making navigation and combat a cautious, methodical process. It feels like piloting a powerful but unwieldy machine through a confusing and hostile environment, where every cleared block is a small victory.
