Game Overview

Tenchi wo Kurau, released by Capcom for the Super Nintendo in 1995, is a side-scrolling beat 'em up set in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms period. It arrived late in the SNES lifecycle, when developers were pushing the hardware with detailed sprites and complex action. You choose from famous generals like Guan Yu or Zhang Fei, each with their own exaggerated, powerful attacks.

You control your chosen warrior through battlefields and fortresses, clearing screens of enemy soldiers and officers. The main goal is to defeat opposing forces across several stages, culminating in confrontations with rival warlords. Signature mechanics include picking up and throwing enemies (or even entire horses), performing screen-clearing super moves by building up a rage meter, and occasionally riding into battle on horseback for faster movement. The game is fast and often difficult, demanding quick reflexes to manage crowds and avoid cheap hits. It feels chaotic and satisfying to plow through hundreds of troops with such over-the-top animations.
