Game Overview

Tengai Makyou Zero came out in 1995 for the Super Nintendo, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that late SNES wave of ambitious, story-heavy RPGs that tried to push the hardware a bit further, with a very specific kind of humor that set it apart from its more serious peers.

You control a young man named Ziria, exploring a version of feudal Japan filled with eccentric characters and supernatural threats. The main goal is to gather the scattered pieces of a powerful artifact, which involves traveling across the land, navigating towns and dungeons screen by screen, and engaging in turn-based combat against a wild bestiary of enemies. The pacing is deliberate, with a lot of dialogue and exploration between fights, and the difficulty feels fair without being punishing. It feels like taking part in a long, meandering folk tale that isn't afraid to be silly.
