Game Overview

I first played Terra Cresta on the NES back in 1986, a port of Nichibutsu's arcade shooter. It was one of those many space shooters from that era, but it had a couple of ideas that made it stand out from the pack, even if it never got the same attention as some of the bigger names.

You pilot a ship that starts off weak, slowly assembling a five-part formation by collecting power-up modules. Each piece you grab attaches to your craft, dramatically increasing your firepower and changing your shot pattern. The goal is simply to survive each vertically scrolling stage, blasting waves of enemy ships and dodging their patterned attacks. The game is brutally difficult; one hit sends you back to your base form, losing all your collected modules. It feels tense and rewarding when your formation is complete, unleashing a storm of bullets before the inevitable mistake resets your progress.
