Game Overview

I remember picking up The Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy for the NES back in 1991. It was published by Taito, and like a lot of licensed games from that era, it tried to capture the show's charm while fitting into the familiar side scrolling platformer mold. You don't see many games based on The Flintstones these days, but back then it was just another cartoon trying to find its place on the console.

You control Fred Flintstone, moving screen by screen through various locations like Bronto Burger and the Bedrock Quarry. The main goal is to find parts for a time machine to rescue your pets, Dino and Hoppy, who have been captured and sent to a future zoo. Fred uses his club to smash enemies and break open certain blocks, and you'll also find yourself playing brief basketball minigames to earn extra lives. The pacing is a bit slow, and some of the platforming can feel stiff, but there's a simple, methodical satisfaction in exploring each area and figuring out where to go next. It feels like a straightforward, slightly clunky adventure that relies more on persistence than precision.
