Play The Hunt for Red October on Snes Online
Creeping through icy waters in a Cold War sub, dodging sonar pings and squeezing off torpedoes when you’ve got no other choice. One wrong move and it’s all over.

I picked up The Hunt for Red October on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1993, a game developed by Beam Software. It was a time when licensed titles were everywhere, some good, some forgettable, and this one tried to capture the tension of the film in a 16-bit format. You don't see many submarine simulators on the SNES, so it always stood out for that reason alone.
You take command of the Red October itself, guiding it through a series of missions to defect to the West. The gameplay is methodical; you manage your sub's depth, speed, and heading on a strategic map while watching for enemy contacts. When things get tense, you switch to a first person periscope view to manually target and fire torpedoes. It's a slow, deliberate experience that punishes mistakes harshly, but successfully sneaking past a patrol or landing a perfect shot provides a real sense of accomplishment. It feels like a careful, high stakes game of chess played in a steel tube at the bottom of the ocean.
