Play The King of Fighters EX : NeoBlood Online

Landing Kyo’s combos on the GBA feels shockingly good—smaller sprites, but that same rush when you pull off a 3v3 comeback with your last fighter nearly dead. The new NeoBlood story mode actually mixes things up instead of just rehashing arcade mode.

Game Overview

If you've ever wanted to take The King of Fighters with you, KOF EX: NeoBlood on the GBA actually pulls it off better than you'd expect. Yeah, the sprites are smaller and the animations simpler, but the moment you land that first crouching heavy kick into a special move with Kyo, it just feels right. The 3v3 team battles translate surprisingly well to the handheld—though I still panic when I'm down to my last fighter with a sliver of health.

What surprised me was the new story mode—it's not just recycled arcade content. There's this whole "NeoBlood" tournament thing with some new characters mixed in with the classics. The music's crunchy GBA versions of familiar tunes, but after a few matches, you stop noticing the soundchip limitations. Honestly? The most impressive part is how they made combos and cancels work so smoothly on a tiny D-pad. It's not perfect, but for portable KOF in 2002, it was kind of magic.

Still my go-to fighter for long bus rides when I want something deeper than button mashing.
