Game Overview

Okay, so The Last Soldier (which is basically the Korean version of The Last Blade) is one of those Neo Geo fighters that makes you realize how much style older games had. It’s got this moody, samurai duel vibe—slow, deliberate slashes instead of button-mashing chaos. The first time I played, I picked Kaede, this brooding swordsman, and immediately got wrecked by the AI because I kept rushing in like an idiot. Turns out, timing and parries matter way more than flashy combos here.

The sprites are gorgeous, all hand-drawn with these dramatic zoom-ins when someone lands a killing blow. And the music? Haunting, like you’re actually in some doomed feudal showdown. It’s not as fast as Street Fighter or as brutal as Samurai Shodown, but there’s something really satisfying about the way every match feels like a tense, back-and-forth duel. Just don’t expect to button-mash your way to victory—this one rewards patience.

Oh, and if you’ve got a buddy, the versus mode is where it really shines. Nothing like the panic of barely blocking a super move at the last second. Neo Geo purists already know this one’s a classic, but if you missed it back in the day, it’s still worth a play for the atmosphere alone.
