Game Overview

Cosmic Soldier - Psychic War is one of those early JRPGs that feels rough around the edges but has this weird charm to it. You start off wandering this futuristic city, talking to random people who might join your squad—some say yes, some just brush you off, which makes recruiting feel oddly personal. The turn-based battles are simple but punishing if you rush in without thinking.

It’s got that classic MSX vibe with chunky sprites and beepy music, though the PC-88 port smooths things out a bit. Don’t expect deep storytelling—most of the dialogue is just functional—but there’s something satisfying about slowly building your team and figuring out which psychic abilities actually work against certain enemies. The first time I got wiped by a random encounter because I brought the wrong party setup, I knew this wasn’t going to be a cakewalk.

If you’re into retro RPGs with a grind-heavy, trial-and-error feel, this is a neat little time capsule from 1985.
