Universal Soldier came out on the Sega Genesis in 1992, published by Accolade. It was part of that wave of games trying to cash in on movie licenses, and it definitely felt like a product of its time, a side-scrolling shooter that didn't quite stand out from the crowd.
You control Luc Deveraux, the character played by Jean-Claude Van Damme in the film, through large, multi-scrolling levels. Your main goal is to blast through endless enemy soldiers and robots, rescuing hostages and destroying key targets. The gameplay hinges on a few key mechanics: a versatile weapon system where you can switch between a standard rifle, a powerful spread shot, and grenades; the ability to jump and cling to certain walls and ceilings to avoid fire; and occasional vehicle sections that break up the action. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with enemy shots coming from all directions. It feels like a constant, chaotic firefight where survival depends on quick reflexes and memorizing enemy placements.
