Universal Soldier came out on the Sega Genesis in 1992, published by Accolade. It was one of those licensed games that tried to ride the wave of the movie, fitting right into the era of action platformers that filled the shelves. You play as Luc Deveraux, the character from the film, moving through side scrolling levels that mix military and industrial settings.
You control Luc through a series of missions, shooting soldiers and robots with a primary gun that can be upgraded to a spread shot or laser. The game uses a screen by screen progression, clearing enemies to advance, and includes some light platforming with occasionally awkward jumps. Health is limited, and enemies respawn quickly, making careful movement important. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes punishing run and gun experience from that period.
