I picked up The Last Starfighter for the NES back in 1990, a game published by Atari, Inc. It was one of those many movie tie-ins from the era, trying to capture the arcade feel of space shooters on the home console. You control Alex Rogan's Gunstar, flying through side-scrolling and top-down stages, blasting waves of Ko-Dan fighters and dodging their fire. The main goal is to survive each stage, defeat the boss, and ultimately take down Xur and the Kodan Armada. The signature mechanics include a rapid-fire blaster, a limited supply of homing missiles for tougher enemies, and a shield that can absorb a few hits before you lose a life. The pacing is relentless, with enemies swarming from all directions, and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding sharp reflexes. It feels like a constant, frantic dance to stay alive just a few seconds longer.
