Play The Last Starfighter Online
NES adaptation of the 80s movie where you pilot a nimble starfighter against swarming enemies. Controls take getting used to, but nailing tight turns feels great. 2-player mode included.
I picked up The Last Starfighter for the NES back in 1990, a game published by Atari, Inc. It was one of those many movie tie-ins from the era, trying to capture the arcade feel of space shooters on the home console. You don't see it talked about as much as the heavy hitters, but it had its own little corner in the library.
You control Alex Rogan's Gunstar, flying through side-scrolling and top-down stages, blasting waves of Ko-Dan fighters and dodging their fire. The main goal is to survive each stage, defeat the boss, and ultimately take down Xur and the Kodan Armada. The signature mechanics include a rapid-fire blaster, a limited supply of homing missiles for tougher enemies, and a shield that can absorb a few hits before you lose a life. The pacing is relentless, with enemies swarming from all directions, and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding sharp reflexes. It feels like a constant, frantic dance to stay alive just a few seconds longer.
