The Lost Vikings came out on Sega Genesis in 1992, developed by Silicon & Synapse, who would later become Blizzard. It was a time when platformers were everywhere, but this one stood apart by making you think more than you ran.
You control three Vikings, each with a unique skill: Erik runs and jumps, Baleog attacks with a sword and bow, and Olaf can block attacks with his shield and create platforms. The goal is to guide all three to the exit in each screen based level. The challenge comes from switching between them to solve environmental puzzles, like having Olaf hold his shield up so Erik can jump from it to reach a higher ledge, or using Baleog to cut a rope that drops a key. The pacing is deliberate, almost puzzle box like, and the difficulty is significant, punishing any mistake in coordination. It feels like conducting a slow, dangerous orchestra where every member has a crucial solo.
