Game Overview

I first came across The Magic of Scheherazade on the NES back in 1987, a game developed by Culture Brain. It stood out among other action RPGs of the time because it blended familiar overhead exploration with a setting drawn from Arabian Nights, something you didn't see every day. The game had a certain charm, a mix of fantasy and folklore that felt fresh on a console dominated by medieval knights and space marines.

You control a hero traveling through different time periods, fighting enemies in real time with a sword or bow, and occasionally getting pulled into turn based battles where you select commands from a menu. The main goal is to rescue the princess Scheherazade by gathering orbs from various dungeons, each filled with puzzles and enemies. The pacing can be uneven, with some frustrating difficulty spikes, especially in the later time periods. It feels like a curious, sometimes clumsy, but always earnest attempt to merge two very different styles of play into one adventure.
