Game Overview

The New Zealand Story came out on the Sega Genesis in 1990, published by Taito. It was one of those bright, colorful platformers that stood out in an era full of them, with a cheerful look that didn't prepare you for how tricky it could get.

You control Tiki, a small kiwi bird, on a mission to rescue your captured friends from a seal named Wally. The game moves screen by screen through levels set in caves, ice fields, and underwater areas. You start with a simple bow, but can pick up weapons like swords, fireballs, or even a crossbow that pins enemies to walls. Finding hidden warp zones and collecting floating letters for extra lives adds to the exploration. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly with precise jumps and aggressive enemies. It feels frantic and silly in the best way, like a cartoon you have to survive.
