Thor: God of Thunder on the DS is one of those surprisingly solid movie tie-ins that doesn’t just rehash the film. Instead, it drops you into an original story where Asgard’s under siege by trolls—and Loki, being Loki, nudges Thor toward revenge. Classic sibling dynamics.

It’s a side-scrolling beat-em-up with that satisfying 90s arcade feel. You’re smashing through waves of enemies with Mjolnir, tossing trolls like ragdolls, and occasionally hurling your hammer across the screen. The combat’s simple but has just enough depth—like timing ground slams or saving up blue orbs to unleash screen-clearing lightning storms. And the rune system? Nice touch. Finding hidden upgrades that tweak your armor or attacks gives you a reason to poke around levels instead of just bulldozing forward.

Visually, it’s all pixel art with a retro charm, though some bosses are so massive they spill across both DS screens. The cutscenes use these slick comic-style portraits (courtesy of Marvel artist Mark Brooks), which fit the vibe better than awkward 3D models would’ve. Plus, beating the story unlocks weird little extras—like a survival mode where health never refills, or a bonus level where you play as other Asgardians. Not bad for a licensed game.

If you miss the days when brawlers had weight to their punches and didn’t overcomplicate things, this one’s a solid pick.
