Thunder Spirits came out for the Super Nintendo in 1991, developed by Technosoft. It was part of that early wave of shooters on the system, a time when developers were still figuring out how to push the hardware. This one was a remake of Thunder Force III from the Genesis, but it had its own adjustments, like some redesigned stages.
You pilot a starfighter through side-scrolling and top-down levels, blasting enemy crafts and installations. The main goal is to survive the onslaught, clearing each stage to reach the final boss. You collect power-ups to swap between several primary weapons, like a wide shot or a forward laser, and you also pick up secondary options like homing missiles or protective shields. The pacing is fast, and the screen gets crowded with enemy bullets and obstacles, making quick reflexes essential. It feels tense and demanding, especially in the later stages where one mistake can cost you a life.
