Thunderground came out for the Atari 2600 in 1983, published by Data Age. It was one of those games that tried to do something a little different on the system, focusing on underground combat and base defense rather than the usual space shooters or maze chases.

You control a small tank that can dig tunnels through soft dirt, avoid or destroy enemy tanks, and defend your base from incoming nukes. The main goal is to protect your stash of explosives by intercepting enemy diggers before they reach it; if they get through, your base is destroyed. You can shoot enemy tanks or simply tunnel around them, but the dirt slowly regenerates, forcing you to keep moving. The pace is relentless, and the difficulty ramps up quickly as enemy numbers increase and the terrain becomes more hazardous. It feels tense and claustrophobic, with every move counting.
