Toe Jam & Earl came out on the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by Johnson Voorsanger Productions. You control either Toe Jam or Earl, exploring a world made of floating islands viewed from above. Your goal is to find the scattered pieces of your wrecked spaceship while avoiding an assortment of odd Earthling enemies, like hyperactive nerds, murderous dentists, and sentient mailboxes. The exploration is screen by screen, and a huge part of the game involves opening presents you find; these can contain anything from helpful rocket skates or invincibility to instant pitfalls or angry tornadoes. The pacing is slow and exploratory, with a constant low-level tension from not knowing if your next discovery will save you or ruin everything. It feels like a chaotic, cooperative treasure hunt where the rules are never quite what you expect.
