Blast through Mars dodging mutants and turrets—half the doors kill you, the gunplay's clunky but weirdly satisfying. Feels like yelling Arnold one-liners in your head the whole time.

Game Overview

Total Recall for the NES came out in 1990 from Interplay Entertainment. It was one of many movie tie-in games from that era, trying to capture the action of the film on the limited hardware. You don't see many people talk about it now, but it was definitely on the rental shelf back then.

You control Arnold Schwarzenegger's character, Doug Quaid, moving screen by screen through a side-scrolling Mars. Your main goal is to find a device called the decoder while fighting off soldiers and mutants. The core mechanics involve shooting enemies with a limited-ammo pistol, finding keycards to open new paths, and avoiding instant-death traps, like certain doors that electrocute you. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is unforgiving, with cheap hits and limited continues. It feels like a constant, jittery scramble for survival where every new screen is a potential game over.
