Transformers for the Nintendo Entertainment System came out in 1986, published by Activision. It was one of those early NES games that tried to capture a popular license, and it arrived during a time when many developers were still figuring out how to make action games feel right on the console. You control either Optimus Prime or Megatron, depending on which side you pick at the start.

You move through side-scrolling levels, punching and shooting at enemy robots while occasionally transforming into a vehicle to cover ground faster or avoid attacks. The main goal is to defeat the opposing leader by collecting energy cubes and destroying their base. The controls are stiff, and the collision detection can be unpredictable, making some fights more frustrating than fun. Even with its rough edges, there's a simple satisfaction in landing a solid hit and hearing that classic transformation sound.
