Traverse: Starlight & Prairie is one of those weird, ambitious SNES JRPGs that never made it West—which is a shame, because it’s got this strange, dreamy vibe. You play as Gant, a kid who gets roped into traveling with this sketchy nobleman named Balmore who swears he’s the rightful heir to some fallen kingdom. Your childhood friend Sonia tags along too, and the three of you just… wander. For ten in-game years.
What’s cool is how open it feels—you can actually ignore Balmore’s whole “restore my kingdom” thing if you want. Instead, you might marry some random villager and settle down, or just hop between the 15+ kingdoms doing odd jobs. The pixel art’s gorgeous, especially the prairie fields at dusk. Just don’t expect a tight plot—it’s more about the melancholy of growing up while the world moves on without you.
