Trouballs came out for the Game Boy Color in 2001, developed by Capcom. It was one of those late-era puzzle games for the handheld, arriving when the GBA was already on the horizon. You don't hear much about it now, but it had a distinct look and feel that set it apart from the more common match-three or falling block games of the time.
You control a small character on a grid filled with colored balls, using a gear mechanism to rotate rows or columns and group same-colored balls together. The main goal is to clear the screen by forming large clusters before the timer runs out or the board fills up. Key mechanics include strategic rotation planning to create chain reactions and managing the constant pressure of new balls dropping in. The pacing is relentless; one wrong move can quickly lead to a cascade of problems. It feels tense and tactical, demanding quick decisions and spatial awareness under pressure.
