Play True Lies (USA, Europe) Online
Tiny Arnie mows down terrorists in tight alleys, ducking behind crates between bursts of pixel gunfire—somehow they even got the hair right on a Game Boy sprite. That horse level still makes zero sense, but nailing a perfect jump-shot combo feels oddly great.
True Lies on the Game Boy came out in 1994, developed by Beam Software and published by LJN. It was one of many licensed games from that era, trying to capture the spirit of a big action movie on a handheld screen. You control Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character, Harry Tasker, through a series of missions based on the film.
You move through levels screen by screen, shooting terrorists with a variety of weapons while avoiding their fire. The main goal is to complete objectives, like rescuing hostages or disarming bombs, often while navigating platforming sections. Signature mechanics include ducking behind cover for protection and using limited special weapons, such as grenades, for tougher enemies. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with precise jumps and quick reactions required. It feels satisfying to clear a crowded room with well-aimed shots, even if the controls take some getting used to.
