Man, Turok 2 on N64 still holds up as one of the gnarliest shooters from that era. You start off in this dense jungle full of raptors that come at you from all angles, and within minutes you're blasting aliens with a gun that literally drills into their skulls. The Cerebral Bore is as ridiculous as it sounds—it locks onto enemies' heads and, well, you can guess the rest.
The levels are huge for an N64 game, with these winding paths that loop back on themselves, and the atmosphere is thick with weird alien temples and swampy ruins. Some of the platforming bits can be janky (this was before dual-stick controls, after all), but there's nothing like creeping through dark corridors only to have some mutant explode through a wall. Just don't expect a chill time—even the basic enemies hit hard.
If you miss when shooters were unapologetically violent and a little messy, this one's a blast. Just keep a spare controller handy for when you rage-quit the underwater level.
