Play Ultima VI - Itsuwari no Yogensha (Japan) (Beta) Online
You wander Britannia solving puzzles that actually make you think, while NPCs drop hints—or straight-up lie to your face. The Japanese beta’s rough edges just add to its weird charm.
Ultima VI on SNES (or Itsuwari no Yogensha if you're playing the Japanese version) drops you back into Britannia, but things aren't exactly peaceful. The puzzles here aren't just "find the key" filler—they're legit brain-teasers that had me scribbling notes like some kind of fantasy detective. At one point I spent way too long trying to figure out how to get past a certain door before realizing the answer was hidden in a random NPC's offhand comment.
Combat's a bit clunky by modern standards, but the world feels alive in that classic Ultima way—people have schedules, weird little secrets, and sometimes just straight-up lie to you. The Japanese beta version has some quirks, like untranslated bits and slightly different sprites, which makes it weirdly charming if you're into that sort of thing. Definitely one of those games where talking to every single person pays off.
