Ultima VI: The False Prophet came out on the Amiga in 1990, developed and published by Origin Systems. You control the Avatar, a hero pulled back into Britannia to deal with a dangerous invasion by gargoyles. Your main goal is to uncover why they’ve attacked and find a way to achieve peace, which involves traveling across the world, talking to countless characters, and gathering key items like the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom. The game plays out in real time, with combat happening right on the exploration screen; you manage a party of up to eight characters, equipping them and directing them in fights. Exploration is screen by screen, with a lot of hidden switches, secret doors, and dungeons that require careful attention. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow by today’s standards, and some puzzles can be quite obscure. Playing it feels like slowly unraveling a massive, layered mystery where every conversation and discovered clue matters.
