Ultima VI: The False Prophet is a 1990 RPG for Amiga. Features real-time combat, open-world exploration, interactive objects, and branching NPC dialogues. The goal is to uncover gargoyle motives and broker peace.
Ultima VI drops you right back into Britannia, but things aren’t as peaceful as you left them. After barely escaping a gargoyle sacrifice, you realize these creatures aren’t just mindless invaders—they’ve got their own reasons for occupying the shrines, and figuring that out becomes half the battle. The world feels alive in a way earlier Ultima games didn’t quite nail; no more jarring switches to combat screens or abstract overworld maps. Instead, you wander seamlessly through towns, dungeons, and wilderness, bumping into enemies (and sometimes friends) along the way.
What really stands out is how much you can mess with everything. Books on shelves? Pick them up. Random barrels? Move ’em, smash ’em, hoard them for no reason. Conversations go deeper too—NPCs have actual personalities now, and your party members actually feel like companions instead of just extra swords. Typing in keywords to steer dialogue can be a little clunky, but it’s worth it when you stumble on some hidden lore or a side quest you’d have missed otherwise.
Combat’s still turn-based, but happening right there in the world makes it feel less like a chore. And if you’re playing the FM Towns version, hearing everyone actually speak their lines (in English or Japanese) adds a weirdly charming layer to the whole thing. Just don’t expect hand-holding—this is the kind of game where you might wander into a dragon’s den five minutes in and have to reload. But that’s part of the fun.
