Ultima VI feels like the first time the series really opened up. You start off in classic Ultima fashion—rescued from a sacrificial altar by your old buddies—but then it drops you into this huge, seamless world where you can just wander anywhere without those awkward map transitions. No more separate battle screens either; fights happen right where you stand, which makes everything feel way more alive.

The gargoyle invasion adds this cool moral twist—you think they’re just monsters at first, but then you realize there’s way more going on. The dialogue’s surprisingly deep too, with NPCs who actually have personalities and weird little quirks. You can even split your party and control each character separately, which is fun until someone wanders into a trap.

Yeah, you still type commands sometimes (old habits die hard), but the mouse-friendly icons make it less of a keyboard workout than earlier Ultimas. And if you’re playing the FM Towns version, everyone’s fully voiced—which is either charming or hilariously dramatic, depending on your tolerance for ’90s voice acting. It’s one of those games where you’ll poke at a random bookshelf for no reason and suddenly uncover some obscure clue.
