Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 came out on the Super Nintendo in 1995, developed by Midway. It was one of the more polished fighting games on the system at the time, squeezing a decent amount of the arcade experience into the cartridge. The roster was expanded from earlier versions, though some characters were still missing, and the visuals pushed the SNES hardware about as far as it could go.
You pick a fighter from the lineup and battle through a series of one-on-one matches. The main goal is to defeat each opponent and ultimately conquer the boss, Shao Kahn. Key mechanics include special moves, like Scorpion's spear or Sub-Zero's ice blast, and the ability to perform fatalities at the end of a match. The pacing is fast, especially with the addition of a run button, and the difficulty can be punishing. It feels like a solid, if slightly compromised, translation of the arcade chaos.
