Ultimate Soccer came out on the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed and published by Sega. It was one of many sports titles on the system, trying to carve out a space with a more arcade oriented take on the sport rather than a pure simulation.
You control a team of five players, moving them up and down the pitch to score goals against your opponent. The main objective is simply to win the match, but the real draw is the custom physics. You can tweak the ball's weight, making it feel feather light or stupidly heavy, which completely changes how you pass and shoot. The teams are unlicensed and all handle wildly different, forcing you to adapt your strategy. The five-a-side mode removes the sidelines, creating pure chaos with no out-of-bounds. It feels fast, a little unpredictable, and entirely focused on quick, arcade style fun.
