Game Overview

Umihara Kawase came out on the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by TNN. It was one of those late-era SNES games that felt a bit different, not trying to be another platformer or RPG but doing its own strange thing. It never got a wide release outside Japan at the time, which made finding a copy or even knowing about it feel like a small discovery.

You control a young girl named Kawase who explores surreal, screen-based levels. Your main tool is a fishing line you can shoot to latch onto ceilings and platforms, using it to swing across gaps, pull yourself up, or even snag enemies. The goal is simply to find the exit in each stage, but the physics of the rubber band-like line make every movement a deliberate calculation. The game is notoriously difficult, demanding precision with every throw and jump; a mistimed swing sends you falling into water or onto spikes. Getting the rhythm of a long, perfect swing through a complex stage provides a genuine thrill.
