Game Overview

Unnecessary Roughness came out in 1993 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a time when PC football games were still figuring out their footing. It was developed by Distinctive Software and published by Electronic Arts, offering a take on the sport that was less about strict simulation and more about pure, chaotic fun. It fit right in with the era's appetite for arcade-style sports titles that prioritized action over realism.

You control a full football team, but the real focus is on the brutal hits and aggressive plays the title promises. The main objective is to win the game, of course, but the path to the end zone is paved with late tackles, cheap shots, and a general disregard for the rulebook. Signature mechanics include calling intentionally violent plays designed to injure key players on the opposing team and engaging in post-whistle brawls that can swing the momentum of a drive. The pacing is frantic, and the difficulty comes from the sheer unpredictability of the mayhem you both dish out and receive. It feels like playing a version of football where the referees have all gone home.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
