You get the basics—five-on-five hockey with all the checking and slap shots you'd expect—but the controls take a second to click. At first, passing feels like you're sliding pucks on butter, but after a few face-offs, you start nailing those cross-ice one-timers.
The pixelated players have this stiff, almost robotic animation, and the commentary is just a few repetitive voice clips ("Nice shot!" gets old fast). But there's something oddly satisfying about the way the goalie flops around like a fish when you deke him out. Play long enough, and you'll notice the AI has some predictable habits—like always going for the same weak backhand move if you pressure them in the corner.
It's not NHL '94, but if you're into retro sports games, it's a fun little time capsule. Just don't expect deep franchise modes or anything fancy.
