Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume is one of those DS games that sticks with you—mostly because it makes you feel terrible in the best way. You play as Wylfred, a guy so hellbent on revenge that he’s willing to sacrifice his own party members for power. Yeah, it’s dark. The tactical battles are solid, but the real tension comes from choosing who to "retire" when things get tough. Turns out, that healer you’ve been relying on might be worth more as a stat boost than an actual teammate. Oof.
The story’s got that classic Norse tragedy vibe, complete with Valkyries and doomed heroes. The writing’s surprisingly good for a handheld RPG, and the multiple endings mean your choices actually matter—especially the morally questionable ones. Just don’t get too attached to anyone. You’ll need to let a few favorites go if you want to survive the later fights.
It’s not for everyone, but if you like your strategy games with a side of guilt, this one’s a hidden gem.
