Play Wares, La (Japan) Online
You play as a kid piloting clunky mechs in turn-based brawls—sword fights but with giant robots, all wrapped in that weirdly cozy SNES RPG vibe. Dodging attacks while standing on your mech’s shoulder never gets old.

Wares, La is one of those weird, charming SNES RPGs that never left Japan—which is a shame, because it’s got this bizarre mix of fantasy and mechs that somehow works. You play as Chiffon, a kid trying to save his kingdom, but instead of typical sword fights, you’re clashing on top of giant robots. The battles feel like a mix of turn-based strategy and action, with these chunky pixel-art mechs lumbering around.
At first, I thought the robot gimmick would just be a visual thing, but nope—you actually move around on them mid-fight, dodging attacks and positioning yourself. The overworld’s got that classic SNES RPG vibe, but then suddenly you’re piloting a hulking machine against some demonic-looking thing. It’s janky in places (translation patches help), but there’s nothing else quite like it. If you dig obscure 16-bit RPGs with oddball twists, this one’s a hidden gem.
