Broderbund released Where in the USA Is Carmen Sandiego? on the Amiga in 1986. It was one of those games that made you feel like you were doing something smart while having fun, a rare mix at the time. You play as a rookie detective for the ACME Detective Agency, hunting down Carmen's henchmen by traveling from state to state. The core of the game involves interviewing witnesses, examining crime scenes for clues, and using a reference book to interpret hints about locations, landmarks, and time zones. You move screen by screen through cities, piecing together where the thief went next before your time or travel budget runs out. The pacing is deliberate; you have to think carefully about each clue or you'll waste precious hours. It feels genuinely satisfying when you finally issue that arrest warrant in the right state.
