I picked up Wolfenstein 3D on the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a port of the original PC game by id Software. It was a strange but welcome thing to have a first-person shooter in your pocket at the time, a genre that didn't really belong on that hardware. The small screen and limited controls made it a very different experience from playing it on a computer, but it was still unmistakably Wolfenstein.
You control B.J. Blazkowicz, an Allied spy, and your job is to fight your way out of Castle Wolfenstein. You move screen by screen through maze-like corridors, collecting keys to open color-coded doors and hunting for secret passages hidden in the walls. The combat is straightforward; you shoot Nazis with a pistol, a machine gun, or a chaingun, and you have to manage your health and ammo carefully. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is unforgiving, especially in the later levels where enemies pour into the rooms. It feels tense and claustrophobic, a constant scramble for survival in tight, hostile spaces.
